Liz Pollard

I work mostly in traditional print media, covering intaglio and relief, etching, linocut, mono-printing and collage. I use photographic references but mostly rely on drawing and watercolour, working to explore and expand initial ideas. My subject matter is grounded in a study of art and its histories through the perspective of feminism.

My training as a mature student of printmaking in the 1990’s and subsequent career as a professional artist/part-time tutor was interrupted by the need to earn a salary. No longer a wage-slave, I can now direct my undivided attention to personal creative growth, drawing on my long-standing interest in art, including decades of life-drawing at evening classes after work.
Abiding interests and influences include Dutch painting, Chardinâ’s still-lives and contemporary video and performance artists, alongside printmakers, photographers and artists from Rembrant and Durer to Nancy Spero and Paula Rego.

My work has developed from the ‘private’ world of domesticity to more outward-looking, landscape-based subject-matter, as I travel with sketchbook and camera, around my favourite localities – liminal spaces with a strong sense of history – coastlines dotted with beach-huts, moors and field edges – attempting to capture with line-drawing then print, the sense of a place.
